Website vs Facebook page: which does a small business need?

A Facebook page is free and useful, but it is not a website. Here is what each one does for a local business and why you want both.

The short answer

Get both, but put the website first. A Facebook page is rented space on someone else's platform. A website on your own .com is yours, shows up in Google searches for your service, and works for people who do not use Facebook.

What a Facebook page is good for

Posting job photos, answering messages, and staying in touch with past customers. It is free and takes ten minutes to start. Keep it going.

What it cannot do

Google shows Facebook pages far less often than a business website when someone searches "plumber near me". You cannot control the layout, you cannot put your own domain on it, and Facebook can change the rules or restrict the page. Some customers will not open a Facebook link at all.

What a website adds

Your own web address, a clear list of services and service area, a quote form that sends leads straight to your email, and pages Google can index by service and city. It also makes your Google Business Profile listing look more legitimate, because the listing links to it.

How to use both

Link your Facebook page from the website, and the website from the Facebook page. Post real work photos on Facebook, then reuse the best ones on the site. Reviews on Facebook and Google both help; ask real customers for them.
