How to find SEO keywords for a local business (free methods)
Four free ways to find the exact words customers type into Google when they need your service.
Start with what customers actually say
Write down how customers describe the job on the phone. "Toilet keeps running", not "plumbing fixture maintenance". Those phrases are your keywords.
Method 1: Google autocomplete
Type your service and city into Google and note the suggestions. Add letters (a, b, c) after the service to see more. Also read the "People also ask" box and the related searches at the bottom.
Method 2: your Google Business Profile
Performance shows the search terms that already bring people to your listing. How to use them.
Method 3: Google Search Console
Once your website is verified, the Performance report shows the queries your site appears for. Look for ones where you show up on page two; a stronger page can move them up.
Method 4: look at competitors
Search your service in your city. See how the top businesses name their services and what pages they have. Do not copy text; note the topics you are missing.
Match keywords to pages
One main keyword per page: service plus city, in the title, the first heading and the first paragraph. Full local SEO checklist.
Keywords to avoid
Broad terms like "plumber" with no city are dominated by big brands. Local phrases with the service and place win for small businesses.
